Complex photobiont diversity in the marine lichen Lichina pygmaea

چکیده
Abstract Lichens are a well-known symbiosis between host mycobiont and eukaryote algal or cyanobacterial photobiont partner(s). Recent studies have indicated that terrestrial lichens can also contain other cryptic photobionts increase the lichens’ ecological fitness in response to varying environmental conditions. Marine live distinct ecosystems compared with their counterparts because of regular submersion seawater much less studied. We performed bacteria 16S 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding surveys assess total diversity within marine lichen Lichina pygmaea (Lightf.) C. Agardh, which is widespread throughout intertidal zone Atlantic coastlines. found addition established Rivularia , L. apparently range freshwater cyanobacteria, as well algae family Ulvophyceae (Chlorophyta). propose multiple cyanobacteria may contribute ability survive harsh fluctuating conditions zone.

Green-algal photobiont diversity (Trebouxia spp.) in representatives of Teloschistaceae (Lecanoromycetes, lichen-forming ascomycetes)
The green algal photobionts of 12 Xanthoria, seven Xanthomendoza, two Teloschistes species and Josefpoeltia parva (all Teloschistaceae) were analyzed. Xanthoria parietina was sampled on four continents. More than 300 photobiont isolates were brought into sterile culture. The nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (nrITS; 101 sequences) and the large subunit of the RuBiSco gene (rb...
متن کاملFungal Diversity Freshwater and marine lichen-forming fungi
Lichen-forming fungi can occur on river and lake margins subjected to varying water levels, and on tidal coastal rocks where they can constitute major components of the biota. There are approximately 700 species known from coastal rocks and 200 from freshwater river and lake margins. Most cannot survive constant immersion although there are exceptions. Some species are only exposed at the lowes...
متن کاملVertical and horizontal photobiont transmission within populations of a lichen symbiosis.
Lichens are widespread symbioses and play important roles in many terrestrial ecosystems. The genetic structure of lichens is the result of the association between fungal and algal populations constituting the lichen thallus. Using eight fungus- and seven alga-specific highly variable microsatellite markers on within-population spatial genetic data from 62 replicate populations across Europe, N...
متن کاملLichen acclimation to changing environments: Photobiont switching vs. climate‐specific uniqueness in Psora decipiens
Unraveling the complex relationship between lichen fungal and algal partners has been crucial in understanding lichen dispersal capacity, evolutionary processes, and responses in the face of environmental change. However, lichen symbiosis remains enigmatic, including the ability of a single fungal partner to associate with various algal partners. Psora decipiens is a characteristic lichen of bi...
